Volume 1 of God’s Prophetic Spirit begins this study’s verse-by-verse exposition of the Bible’s references to the Holy Spirit’s work with man.
Essay #1 – “The Work of the Holy Spirit in Old Testament History”
This essay begins in Genesis with the Bible’s first reference to the Spirit’s influence with man – “And Pharaoh said to his servants, “Can we find a man like this, in whom is the Spirit of God?” (Genesis 41:38). From that point through the rest of Old Testament history (including the Wisdom Literature), there are more than 30 explicit references to the Spirit’s work with man. Essay #1 looks at each of those instances. Many of the metaphors and images we still use today to talk about the Holy Spirit’s work were first revealed to man in these 30 passages. This one essay will introduce to you critical and enduring concepts every Bible student needs to know in his study about the Holy Spirit.
Essay #2 – “The Work of the Holy Spirit in Old Testament Prophecy”
Essay #2 finishes the journey through the Old Testament by looking at the prophet’s appeals to the Holy Spirit. Their words rest upon the teaching of the Old Testament writers examined in Essay #1 and help to build a bridge to the New Testament’s doctrine about the Holy Spirit. The prophecies of the Old Testament are the foundation of the Holy Spirit’s work in the church. The words of Joel, Isaiah, and Ezekiel must be understood by every Bible student. Bringing to light the significance of their messages is the focus of this essay.
